About This Family
Distribution:
Tropical to temperate marine waters worldwide.
Habitat:
Continental shelves and insular waters; occasionally in offshore waters to about 1200 m depth.
Remarks:
Mackerel sharks have pointed snouts, hefty bodies and nearly symmetrical caudal fins, with a lateral keel on the caudal peduncle for faster swimming. The underslung mouth contains several rows of large triangular teeth.
They are the widest ranging of all the elasmobranchs.
The family lamnidae includes three genera: Carcharodon (the great white), Isurus (makos), and Lamna (the salmon shark and the porbeagle). This family also includes the extinct megalodon.
